Makeup Work for Dance

ANYTIME you are absent, you need to access this blog and do a makeup assignment- each one is worth 40 points (2 days) and you cannot do the same thing twice, but in a vague research assignment (research a choreographer) then you can do a different choreographer the second time through.

Option 1
Select a musical that was produced between 1920 and 1980.
Youtube search 2 musical numbers from this show and watch them.
Give the URL (website address) for each piece and the title.
How did the routine expand the story?
What did you like about the routine?
What did you not connect with?
Who was the choreographer of this show? What other work have they done?

Option 2
Select a choreographer (google famous choreographers)
Youtube search 2 pieces that this choreographer has worked on.
Critique both pieces, putting the URL (website address) for the video, and the title of the piece
How were these pieces similar?
What are some style nuances this choreographer seems to have?
What do you like about their choreography?
What influences do they list behind their choreography? (do some research on biographical info for the person)

Option 3
Select a dance genre (Ballroom, Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Broadway, etc) and research the following
Where does this style get its roots?
How did it become popular?
Who are some pioneers for this dance style?
What are some hallmarks of this style of dance? (tells a story, short quick movements, etc)
What do you like about this style of dance?

Welcome Back Rally

Well great job overall dancers on your first rally- you learned quite a bit of material in four styles, plus some great tricks, in 2 weeks. You should be proud!

A couple of things to clean up-
1- These transitions are really rough (I didn't choreograph any) and I don't want you to pick up that habit- just a note- it was a time issue really- but the goal is for seamless, easy transitions that are constantly dancing.

2- The moments between movements are not holds- there should be energy in your body and purpose in your movements and faces the entire time- we need to work on that- some of you are looking to the next thing and some of you completely drop off energy until you get to the next thing. DANCE THROUGH!

3- Some timing issues throughout- for couple work during twist, you should be closer together.

More to come - feel free to comment on things you notice as well!

Dance III Boy/Girl Bands

TLC Scrubs
  • All need same costuming - hats and hoodies
  • Directions for beginning with hat and hoodie (step touch) should be the same
  • When you step on the hoodie, slam your foot down and then jump back away from it and keep dancing- leave it there- don't take the time to pick it up and move it- not as smooth.
  • EVERYTHING should be BIGGER!! Chorus is awesome, you just need to dance it bigger- way more energy
Spice Girls
  • GREAT job getting them down, nice choreo
  • get step touch and hip wiggle in opening together
  • no open legs when you squat and come up rubbing your legs (dirty)
  • Carly, don't cross in front of Selena, just come forward from formation
  • Zigazig ahhh at end needs to be to audience and bigger - turn to side 1-4 and then front to do knees 5-8
Pussycat Dolls
  • Opening is a little lazy- commit to the choreography and punch it
  • Stage all to one side- Marina is off by herself, get with the formation
  • Widen your stance on chorus to mimic Hannah's more
  • Sam you need to lean AWAY from your split, not into it.
  • Ending needs to be something you can hold!

Danity Kane
  • Don't watch each other! Everything needs to be bigger, and nothing is really synchronized yet.
  • When coming up from the squat, define the arms (Missty had some choreography it looked like, mimic that
  • Finish the routine!! Incomplete as is.
New Edition
  • GREAT job with choreo, crowd appeal
  • how will you stage the opening in the gym? no curtain? maybe start in a diamond with Anthony ducked down in the beginning, then you either spread out to let him walk through, or drop as he walks through?
  • Get arms all the way out when you extend them- no halfway
  • Aaron, your hips are a little whacky - we need to get you in sync with others
  • What is the Batman transition?! A little out of the style...
  • No need to take the shirt off Anthony- it cheapens you :) You are not a piece of meat.
  • Stephen, last formation you are hiding behind Martin- move out.
Lady Marmalade
  • Challenge - de-sexify
  • Alaina move towards Alison in opening
  • I would start in a tighter formation and then open up during the walk, but need to see some kind of transition during that walk
  • BIGGER arms on "itchy kitchy" - off your body
  • NO LEG FLASH, and no booty out getting up from that- use arms, not hips
  • Smoother at the end getting up- roll towards the back if you have to to stand up
I Want You Back (Jackson 5)
  • Austin late in the beginning?
  • Great opening section
  • Find a way to be smoother getting up- like the turnout of it, but need to move straight into next piece of choreo-
  • Where is the rest?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSb8HWSgSgM
Backstreet Boys-
  • Opening formation- Adrian, scoot towards center stage more, can't see Michael
  • Don't watch Aron- everybody should probably have their heads down
  • In opening arms, either everyone needs to groove like Aron, or all need to be still with lower body
  • Adrian? memory? All need to watch rhythm once beat starts
  • On last formation change- it's a signature move! Really reach to each side bigger, punch it- stronger arms. NEEDS AN ENDING!

Destiny's Child
  • Do something with the 2nd 8 count in the beginning- either switch the formation again, or do some military style movement here- don't stand. You got our attention!
  • Be sure not to watch!
  • 1st formation Lindsey should be on the outside, 2nd formation, Stacy needs to move out
  • Stacy don't turn your torso towards the side on the snake- keep square to the front
  • end?  needs a stopping point- like a pose.
