1. Newsies- Story- Young newsboys from all over New York are upset when the publisher, Joseph Pulitzer, raised prices on papers. They decided to meet together and stop selling, organizing the first strike in US history. This song is them all deciding to strike.

Newsies- Seize the Day
2. Hairspray- Story- A popular tv show features "all-american" white kids every day but one, when they have "negro day" featuring African American singers and dancers. A girl who is a bit bigger than the others is also barred from performing on the show, until all the kids decide to make changes happen. This song is at that point.

3. Matilda- Story- A rambunctious girl is in school, with an evil headmistress (like a Principal) running things. She decides to rally her classmates and take action, working to make a change

4. Cinderella - Story- All the women in a kingdom were invited to a ball to help the prince choose a bride. Cinderella was not allowed to go according to her stepmother, and her stepsisters tore up her dress so she wouldn't have anything to wear. This is what happens next.

5. On Your Feet- the Gloria Estefan Story- Gloria fled Cuba as a toddler when Fidel Castro came into power, and came to the United States as a refugee. When her father became ill, her mother had to work, and Gloria was in charge of her younger siblings. Her only escape was music. One day at a wedding, she met her future husband, Emilio Estefan, who ran a band- the band had no lead singer, no females. He asked her to sing with them and then she joined the band. This number is their first Las Vegas show as the Miami Sound Machine.

Makeup Work
Makeup Work for Dance
ANYTIME you are absent, you need to access this blog and do a makeup assignment- each one is worth 40 points (2 days) and you cannot do the same thing twice, but in a vague research assignment (research a choreographer) then you can do a different choreographer the second time through.
Option 1
Select a musical that was produced between 1920 and 1980.
Youtube search 2 musical numbers from this show and watch them.
Give the URL (website address) for each piece and the title.
How did the routine expand the story?
What did you like about the routine?
What did you not connect with?
Who was the choreographer of this show? What other work have they done?
Option 2
Select a choreographer (google famous choreographers)
Youtube search 2 pieces that this choreographer has worked on.
Critique both pieces, putting the URL (website address) for the video, and the title of the piece
How were these pieces similar?
What are some style nuances this choreographer seems to have?
What do you like about their choreography?
What influences do they list behind their choreography? (do some research on biographical info for the person)
Option 3
Select a dance genre (Ballroom, Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Broadway, etc) and research the following
Where does this style get its roots?
How did it become popular?
Who are some pioneers for this dance style?
What are some hallmarks of this style of dance? (tells a story, short quick movements, etc)
What do you like about this style of dance?
Option 3

Welcome Back Rally
Well great job overall dancers on your first rally- you learned quite a bit of material in four styles, plus some great tricks, in 2 weeks. You should be proud!
A couple of things to clean up-
1- These transitions are really rough (I didn't choreograph any) and I don't want you to pick up that habit- just a note- it was a time issue really- but the goal is for seamless, easy transitions that are constantly dancing.
2- The moments between movements are not holds- there should be energy in your body and purpose in your movements and faces the entire time- we need to work on that- some of you are looking to the next thing and some of you completely drop off energy until you get to the next thing. DANCE THROUGH!
3- Some timing issues throughout- for couple work during twist, you should be closer together.
More to come - feel free to comment on things you notice as well!
